funny thing, love

see, the thing about love stories is that there is always a template.
boy meets girl
girl meets boy
they fall in love
might have a fight( if you're going for the indian version)
one might cheat on the other (if you want to take a cheap shot at love)
they work it out because of their all-consuming love for each other.
but what if love wasn't so easily defined?
so easily found?
what if you passed that "one true love" as they call it; lived parallel lives but never met?

In college there is a clear status order. wildly popular. mildly popular. not popular.
aliya was mildly popular. arjun wasn't. not even a bit. He studied. got proficiency; and was in love with post its.
she spoke too fast; had a zillion friends and never knew him.
different classes; different lives, destined never to meet.
but they did; one fine day.
aliya was taking photographs of unknown people being really good at it.
arjun, sitting afar was holding a discourse on vain people, telling whoever would listen.

arjun was sitting in the canteen teaching a bunch of hopeless students just enough to pass.
aliya passing by was commenting on the nerds who did nothing but study and loved their one moment when people actually wanted them.

but unknown to all; they both had a secret vice; and that's where they met.
arjun was justified i guess; as a nerd; to love anime.
aliya couldn't tell anyone. Oh  the horrors!

so she went to these conventions; a pair of sunglasses serving as her disguise.
he went with a bowler hat; he didn't need to announce his nerd status to the world.

but like i said, they were to meet one day. and they did. at the annual mega convention for anime lovers.
fate is a funny thing. it brings you together when you least expect it. arjun's partner dropped out. aliya didn't have one. and they were paired up for the most difficult quiz on anime ever.
needless to say, they won.

as the days passed, they got to know of their common lives for the last two years. and then they became friends. lines were blurring as they hung out together. taking pictures, studying, and having fun.
was it that easy? to find love?
yes. sometimes it is. Because one fine day, he asked her out, hesitatingly for coffee.
"it's high time you did; i thought you never would."
And just like that, they had met.
love is a funny thing. you never know what comes next. aliya didn't. not the roses or the declaration of love. or the proposal.
love turns your no into a yes.
and they spent the rest of their lives, together, attending anime conventions.
